Theories!...Theories everywhere!...

Just so all y'all outside the bubble know, Clark is looking to put together a theory/history of archaeology book for 501/510. He's looking for contributors to write the chapters, so here's your free chance to publish, folks!

If it actually happens, it'll be a good opportunity to really attack a theory or two in-depth and to leave a tidge of a legacy for future generations--spare them reading Hawaiki, I hope. I imagine he'll be up for a goodly number of us putting in on this, so I guess stay-tuned, but be thinking about what theories you specifically want to see in it. He's also planning on a section for statehood, origins of agriculture, etc. Basically it'll be a big study guide for the competency.

Did JC actually solicit people to write chapters? While he is quick to bag on the writing of some of the bigs, it would surprise me if he turned to his students to contribute to something like this.

I also question whether he wants students to contribute. Are you sure he isn't just planning on putting together a compilation of papers already written?

I wonder the same thing Mike. He could just be getting us to find the "best" papers out there and then he would compile them. In other words, doing the legwork for him. Of course, I didn't talk to him, but he seems to have little faith in the writing abilities of most students.

A follow-up from today's chat with the big guy:

He's ordered a bunch of theory books and wants to look at what's primarily being put in those compilations before doing anything, but he HAS specifically said that we'll be writing some of the chapters--he made some comment about trusting this generation, interestingly enough. I know it's out of character and don't blame you all for being skeptical, but there it is. Granted, the time frame is over the next year or even more, so perhaps he'll lose faith in us once again.

Also, he said he's talked to Dr J about the 501/510 overlap. The plan now is to combine theory and history in 510 and make 501 strictly issues-based studies. Or I might have the course numbers switched, dunno, but that could be a useful change.

I'm flabberghasted and amazed. And I would almost say a little hurt that he apparently thought "our" generation was to crappy to put a book together for him, but as I've long since lost the ability to feel any pain from his primarily critical and tactless comments (although usually correct), I don't care.

Dave,

You said "to crappy"

Correction: "too crappy"

Let the evidence speak for itself

Sorry, I know I make typos and other errors all the time. Couldn't resist.
