What about this...
Say I plotted all of the known Fremont residential sites by UTMs, and classified them by the dominant ceramic series (i.e., Paragonah=Snake Valley, Five Finger Ridge=Sevier, etc). Then, I would do a k-means cluster analysis of the sites.
I would then overlay the two maps, one with the clusters and one with the dominant ceramic type.
What exactly would it mean if the sites clustered by ceramic type? I think that this would be meaningful, but I'm not exactly sure how. Your input would be appreciated...

Chris, which variables would you include on the k-means cluster analysis?
Because I'm not a statistics guy and I'm to lazy to get out my notes, can you give a quick and dirty description of what the K-means cluster analysis is and does?
Aside from that, I forgot to add...sounds like a good idea. I really think that all the data in the SHPOs is often underutilized. Right now I'm doing some research on the Mojave Sink in the Mojave Desert in so cal. This area appears to have been a border land for at least three different groups ethnographically. I'm thinking about using SHPO data (IMACs) to plot all the sites assigned to the different cultures and see where the boundaries fall. Right now its pretty contested.
Hi, I was wondering if you were sucessful in comparing the volcanic tuffs to Snake Valley ceramics from parowan.
Jason,
Welcome to the Blog. Chris is the guy to ask about SVG.
Tell us a little about yourself/research, etc.
Well Jason, I believe that the source of Snake Valley pottery is heterogeneous and indistinct. Alan Reed, if you're familiar with the Kern River II report, disagrees with this, though I feel that they had to leave too many sherds "unclassified" to make their compositional groups.
The distribution of Snake Valley pottery (also addressed in my thesis) indicates that it was probably primarialy produced in (or at least passed through) the Parowan Valley.
I missed the deadline for submitting my thesis this semester, but it will be available on-line this April. If you have any further inquiries, please email me at:

We're all pretty surprised to see someone we don't know interested in this, so as Aaron said, please tell us a little about yourself.
The only Jason that comes to mind that would be interested in Fremont ceramics is Jason Bright.
Is this you?
There are thousands of Jasons though, so who knows?
Anyway, it's great to see some new people dropping by.
I posted an abstract of my current work.
recently graduated, and moved out west, Im originally from RI.
Let me say it before Chris does, "What the H?!"
Amen Mr. Yodder. I say what the FILLFOUL?!?
